Modeling Organizations: Methods Used by Real-World Designers

چکیده
representation of organizational behavior amenable to simulation, generation of design alternatives, etc. The task of RWD is to generate a concrete, workable design that will address specific problems in a specific organization. In pursing RWD, designers have access to, and are influenced by, a rich set of organizationspecific knowledge (e.g., culture, standard practice, knowledge of individual idiosyncrasies). What might be considered extraneous issues from a COD perspective are kept at the forefront of the RWD task. For instance, some real-world designers tend to ignore certain organizational features that might embarrass or offend) Thus real-world design is more deeply embedded in the rich, complex and often unprogrammable world that sociologists with a penchant for neologism call "everyday life." This embeddedness has two implications that differentiate RWD from COD: First, since RWD is embedded in an organizational context, realworld designers have access to knowledge that helps them get around tricky modeling problems-they thus have a leg up on the more abstract and formalistic COD designers. Second, and formalistic COD designers. Second, however, this same access sometimes leads realworld designers to generate models that are more influenced by the context of the design task than Business, Stanford University, 1992; and "’Seeing the Elephant’: A Grounded Theory of the Role of Knowledge Interests in Business Process Reengineering," unpublished manuscript, submitted to the 1994 Academy of Management meetings. 3 See Borys, 1992, op cit.

Conceptual Modeling with the Object-process Methodology in Software Architecture*
The ultimate goal of software design is to transform real world problems into software solutions. Architectural design is the earliest phase of this process. It is a phase in which conceptual modeling plays an important role. In conceptual modeling, designers pay more attention to accurately describing real world problems than making detailed design decisions. Object-Oriented Analysis and Desig...
متن کاملA declarative approach to procedural modeling of virtual worlds
With the ever increasing costs of manual content creation for virtual worlds, the potential of creating it automatically becomes too attractive to ignore. However, for most designers, traditional procedural content generationmethods are complex and unintuitive to use, hard to control, and generated results are not easily integrated into a complete and consistent virtual world. We introduce a no...
متن کاملMobiDSL - a Domain Specific Language for Mobile Web Applications : developing applications for mobile platform without web programming
The enormous potential of mobile web as an information appliance presents all organizations an urgent need and a compelling reason to not only create mobile specific versions of certain parts of their current systems, but also develop new mobile web applications to derive maximum benefit from this medium. However, as mobile web applications are generally being built using the same web engineeri...
متن کاملAN ALGEBRAIC FRAMEWORK FOR COMPOSITIONAL DESIGN OF AUTONOMOUS AND ADAPTIVE MULTIAGENT SYSTEMS by WALAMITIEN
Organization-based Multiagent Systems (OMAS) have been viewed as an effective paradigm for addressing the design challenges posed by today’s complex systems. In those systems, the organizational perspective is the main abstraction, which provides a clear separation between agents and systems, allowing a reduction in the complexity of the overall system. To ease the development of OMAS, several ...
متن کاملLNAI 3913 - Formal Modeling and Analysis of Organizations
A new, formal, role-based, framework for modeling and analyzing both real world and artificial organizations is introduced. It exploits static and dynamic properties of the organizational model and includes the (frequently ignored) environment. The transition is described from a generic framework of an organization to its deployed model and to the actual agent allocation. For verification and v...
